Cumaru Wood Decking

At The Deck & Fence Depot, we pride ourselves on becoming the ultimate destination for premium decking lumber. We take pride in offering a wide range of high-quality wood species, and we would like to introduce you to the magnificent tropical wood known as Cumaru.

Cumaru, scientifically classified as Dipteryx odorata, is a remarkable hardwood species native to the tropical regions of South America. It is also commonly referred to as Brazilian Teak due to its similarity in appearance and durability to traditional teak wood. With its stunning natural beauty and exceptional strength, Cumaru has become a popular choice among homeowners, contractors, and designers for decking projects.

One of the most striking features of Cumaru is its rich, warm color palette. Ranging from golden tan to reddish-brown, this wood species exhibits a natural luster that enhances any outdoor space. As Cumaru ages, it undergoes a beautiful transformation, deepening its hue and developing a unique patina that adds character and charm to your deck.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Cumaru boasts impressive durability and longevity. It is known for its exceptional resistance to decay, insects, and rot, making it an ideal choice for outdoor applications, especially in regions with challenging weather conditions. Whether you face intense sunlight, heavy rainfall, or high humidity, Cumaru decking stands strong, maintaining its structural integrity and beauty for years to come.

The density of Cumaru wood is another remarkable attribute. With a Janka hardness rating of around 3,540 pounds, Cumaru is significantly harder than traditional decking materials like cedar or pine. This incredible hardness not only ensures its ability to withstand heavy foot traffic and impact but also contributes to its resistance against scratches and dents, providing a long-lasting, low-maintenance decking solution.

Furthermore, Cumaru is highly resistant to warping and cupping, thanks to its natural oils and interlocking grain pattern. These inherent qualities make it an excellent choice for areas with high moisture content, such as poolside decks or waterfront applications. You can enjoy your Cumaru deck without worrying about excessive swelling, shrinking, or splintering that can be common with other wood species.

We offer Cumaru decking boards in various dimensions and profiles to suit your specific project needs. Whether you prefer a smooth, sleek surface or a textured, grooved profile for enhanced slip resistance, we have got you covered. We source our Cumaru from responsibly managed forests, ensuring its sustainability and compliance with ethical forestry practices.

Investing in Cumaru decking not only enhances the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space but also contributes to the preservation of tropical forests. By choosing Cumaru, you are making a conscious choice for a renewable and eco-friendly decking option.

Ipe Wood Decking

Ipe Wood Decking is one of the gastest growing wood choices for decks for both homes and businesses in the last decade. Homeowners and contractors are discovering this South American beauty and its natural beauty. IPE is a true hardwood that has natural preservatives and is a whopping THREE times harder than cedar is.

Ipe wood is an extremely dense wood and is a dark brown color by nature . Fun fact, IPE has the same fire rating as both concrete and steel! Crazy right? Due to this incredible density & the natural preservatives, Ipe lumber makes a wonderful choice for a decking material.

IPE has a natural oil that actually keeps insects out. It also has a strong resistance to both mildew and moisture decay which helps with longevity of the wood.

If maintained properly, IPE lasts between 25-50 years if it is maintained properly. Over time, Ipe usually weathers to a gray coloring.

IPE typically costs at least 30% more than cedar. Ipe lumber also must be predrilled in order for it to allow screws and stainless steal fasteners to be used, as the wood is so dense. IPE does require a sealer every couple of years in order to maintain it’s wholesome deep, rich color.

Thermally Modified Decking

Thermally Modified Decking: Enhancing Durability and Beauty

At The Deck & Fence Depot, we pride ourselves on offering the finest selection of tropical hardwoods and decking products to transform your outdoor living spaces. One such product that stands out for its exceptional durability and beauty is thermally modified decking. Combining the allure of natural wood with enhanced performance characteristics, thermally modified decking is an excellent choice for homeowners seeking a premium decking solution.

Thermally modified decking undergoes a specialized heat treatment process that enhances the wood’s stability and durability. The process involves subjecting the wood to high temperatures, typically around 400-450 degrees Fahrenheit, in a controlled environment. This intense heat modifies the wood’s cell structure, resulting in numerous benefits that set it apart from traditional decking options.

  1. Improved Stability: Through thermal modification, decking wood becomes more dimensionally stable, meaning it experiences significantly reduced expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature and humidity. This stability minimizes the risk of warping, cupping, and splitting, ensuring your deck remains structurally sound for years to come.
  2. Enhanced Resistance: Thermally modified decking exhibits superior resistance to decay, rot, and insect attack. The heat treatment alters the wood’s chemical composition, rendering it less susceptible to biological degradation. This increased resistance translates to a longer lifespan, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and replacement.
  3. Natural Beauty: Despite undergoing a transformative process, thermally modified decking retains its natural beauty and elegance. The heat treatment brings out the wood’s rich, deep tones, resulting in a visually stunning appearance that complements any outdoor setting. Whether you prefer a warm, reddish-brown hue or a deep, chocolatey color, thermally modified decking offers a range of aesthetic options to suit your personal style.
  4. Sustainability: Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our selection of thermally modified decking. The process utilizes heat rather than chemical treatments, making it an environmentally friendly choice. Furthermore, the wood used for thermally modified decking is often sourced from responsibly managed forests, ensuring the preservation of natural resources for future generations.
  5. Ease of Maintenance: Thermally modified decking requires minimal maintenance compared to other decking materials. The heat treatment increases the wood’s resistance to moisture absorption, reducing the risk of mold and mildew growth. Regular cleaning and periodic application of a protective finish are typically sufficient to maintain the decking’s beauty and longevity.

By choosing thermally modified decking, you invest in a premium product that combines the timeless elegance of wood with enhanced durability and stability.
